Michael “Mike” Adams: Humanitarian Radio Response Leader & Founder, Rapid Response Radio

Michael (Mike) Adams is an internationally recognized radio engineer, humanitarian communicator, and the driving force behind Rapid Response Radio (RRR), a global initiative dedicated to bringing lifesaving information to communities in the immediate aftermath of disasters. Having spent more than two decades building and deploying emergency radio stations around the world, Mike has become a leading authority on rapid-response broadcast communication in humanitarian crises.
Mike’s work began in earnest after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, when he and his colleagues experienced firsthand the power of radio to help devastated communities recover. That initial deployment revealed a critical insight: traditional disaster response often took too long to restore communication, leaving affected populations without vital information when they needed it most. Determined to change that, Mike pioneered techniques, equipment, and training protocols designed to get emergency radio stations on the air within 72 hours of a crisis, even where infrastructure has been destroyed.
Under Mike’s leadership, First Response Radio evolved into a network of broadcasters, NGOs, and government partners. The organization’s mission to equip, train, and empower local responders to establish “radio in a suitcase” stations rapidly in disaster-prone areas reflects Mike’s belief that communication is as vital as food, water, and shelter in the early stages of a disaster. Teams trained through FRR use portable studios and mobile transmitters to deliver critical relief information, connect families, and give affected communities a voice when traditional systems fail.
Mike has overseen deployments and capacity building across Asia and beyond, including responses to major events like floods, earthquakes, typhoons, and humanitarian emergencies. His approach emphasizes preparedness, pre-positioning equipment, building local partnerships, and mentoring response teams so that when disaster strikes, the time to air is measured in hours, not weeks.
In 2026, Mike is launching a new capacity-building project with the goal of “giving away” the knowledge and systems developed through years of field experience: Rapid Response Radio. The initiative will help humanitarian and communications agencies build their own rapid-deploy radio stations, complete with a curated shopping list of gear that can dramatically lower costs compared to conventional broadcast solutions.
Known for his practical engineering insight, deep humanitarian commitment, and belief in empowering local responders, Michael Adams continues to advocate that in disaster zones, reliable communication saves lives.
